Gone are the days when the people of London have to wear grotty old dentures!
Modern cosmetic dentures are now far more comfortable, acceptable and in fact you’d be surprised at how many people are actually wearing dentures without you knowing.
If you no longer have any of your natural teeth you have the option of either having:
If you have several missing teeth, possibly from some time ago, then you will benefit from having dentures as they will provide support for your cheeks and lips. When we design your dentures this way it can reduce the amount of lines and wrinkles around your face, this has the result of making a more youthful look and can literally take years off you.
This is the difference between a denture without any thought, and a denture from The Dental Centre London.
Dentures are removable replacements for your missing teeth, designed to look and function like your own natural teeth and surrounding gum tissues. They are generally made from an ultramodern acrylic material which is high-strength and durable. If you look after the dentures then this material is unlikely to staining or darken and will remain fresh and natural looking for many years.
Many local people in the Euston and wider London area have only a few teeth missing, if this is the case then a partial denture could work well for you. We generally design these with small clips (known as clasps) which grip the surrounding teeth and hold a partial denture in place.
Again it is down to precise design to ensure that these clasps or clips are minimal and whenever possible are not seen. We also need to ensure that these clips really do hold the denture firmly in place and do not strip the gum away from the tooth, which can happen in cheaper dentures.
If you’re looking to keep the cost of dentures lower than this is one of the problems which can arise from poorly made dentures. Cheaper dentures have a tendency to rub against the gum, over a period of this time this can pull the gum away from the tooth as it irritates the soft tissue. When this happens it is possible that the bone can also resorb which ultimately leads to tooth loss.
It really is important to ensure that you have good quality dentures, so sometimes paying a little more for your dentures in the long run means the cost of wearing good quality dentures is actually very low!
One of the most common reasons that people break their dentures is when they drop them in the sink. We therefore always recommend that whenever you clean your dentures it is a good idea to fill the sink with a couple of inches of water. Then if you accidentally drop your dentures they will fall into water and not onto a hard ceramic sink.
Whilst your dentures are always very strong, just like toast always lands butter side down if you drop it, Murphy’s Law says that your adventure will land on a corner which can end up breaking it.
We also recommend that you purchase a special denture cleaner as some toothpastes can be rather abrasive if you use them on dentures. A special denture cleaner will act to remove the biofilm layer which forms over the top of your dentures and indeed teeth all day. If this biofilm layer is not removed it can turn into plaque.
These special cleaners with dedicated denture cleaning tablets will ensure that the biofilm layer is removed adequately at the end of each day and so will keep your denture feeling fresh and new for many years.
If you already have dentures, it is still important to continue to have regular dental check-ups to ensure that the soft-tissue remains healthy. Your denture will be held in place either by clips on the surrounding teeth, or if you have no teeth it will be held in place by the suction against your gums. If your denture does not fit your gums exactly then the suction will be reduced and the dentures will become loose.
For this reason it is still important to maintain your regular health checkups, your dentist will be able to check that the gums still fit exactly inside the denture. If they don’t then it is possible to ‘reline’ the denture with some fresh acrylic to ensure that it actually fits your gums again, thereby restoring the suction and holding your dentures in stronger again.
